To a Healthy Heart

Since it is Friday, CHA would like to share and summarize with you this article with helpful lifestyle tips. The article is called "One Recipe for Healthier Life: Eat Heart-friendly Foods" by Howard Cohen of the Miami Herald. The heart is a vital organ for daily function and needs to be taken care of by you. Ways to keep your heart healthy is by keeping the blood pathways, to and from your heart, clear and uncongested. Pathways get congested when you have high LDL (bad) cholesterol. Making better choices on what you eat can reduce the risk of accumulating high LDL (bad) cholesterol and can also increase your HDL (good) cholesterol. Here are 10 things that tame high cholesterol:

  • Salmon – rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps boost the immune system
  • Ground flax seeds – rich in fiber and vegetarian omega-3
  • Nuts – contains vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and magnesium, BUT consume moderately because they are high in calories
  • Beans and legumes – rich in magnesium, Vitamin B complex, and fiber
  • Berries and oranges – blueberries: rich in ellagic acid and antioxidants, which helps blood pressure
  • Red wine – contains antioxidants
  • Oatmeal – contains omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and niacin
  • Avocado – packed with healthy monounsaturated fat and promote absorption of carotenoids for heart health
  • Tea (black or green) – rich in flavoniods, antioxidants that protects cells
  • Dark chocolate – high flavanol content that helps with blood flow. Choose ones that have AT LEAST 70% pure cocoa for beneficial effects

Hope this was beneficial for you to stay motivated to keep your heart healthy! HAPPY FRIDAY!!!
